Final Layers of Progress on the Apple Bunch Illustration
More Progress on the Apple Bunch Illustration
Expanding my Portfolio with Packaging Illustration
Over the last couple of years, I've gotten more and more commissions for bespoke packaging illustration. The workload and timeline for these projects are super demanding as they're generally larger in scope and scale than most of my editorial assignments, but they've really pushed me to create some of my best work and given me the space to tackle larger, more detailed subject matter.
The only real downside has been that I've had to sign NDA (non-disclosure agreements) and promise not to share the work in my portfolio or on social until it's out in stores. This is fine in theory, but I've learned that it sometimes takes quite a while for this happen. For instance, I did a project in 2016 that has still yet to hit the shelves.
Since I'd like to do more packaging illustration in the future, I figured I should work on building out my portfolio with the kind of works I've been commissioned to do for existing packaging projects. Generally these have been clusters of realistic fruits and flowers still on the vine, with leaves, blossoms, etc.
So this week I'm starting in on an 11x15 illustration of some red, ripe apples with big bunches of shiny green leaves, and a cluster of blossoms. I've only gotten the first few layers down so far, but I'm really liking how it's coming along.
