Wall Street Journal Off Duty
Editorial illustrations for The Wall Street Journal’s Off Duty section. Assignment was to create illustrations to support an article and recipe about the origins of Boston Cream Pie. The feature called for one main illustration showcasing a Boston Cream Pie along with its ingredients, and one small spot illustration showing a slice of pie with coffee.
Two sketch options were presented to the client. First a standard layout with the ingredients surrounding the subject.
The second option played off of the client’s request that the illustration evoke a feeling reminiscent of vintage Audubon illustrations. Isolating each element gives the composition a more scientific aesthetic. This was the option selected by the client.
A combination of watercolor and colored pencil was used to create a realistic and timeless look.
Simple lettering was added digitally to the finished illustration to further enhance the vintage scientific vibe.
The final illustrations were used in the print issue as well as online.
Spot illustration process
The same mixed media techniques were used to create the spot illustration. As with much of my work, the piece was created at a larger scale to allow for sufficient development of detail.
